Electric golf cars were made available to the general public because of gas rationing that accompanied World War II. So in 1951, Merle Williams' invention went commercial. However, it wasn't until the early 70s that gas golf cars came on the scene, primarily to better handle some of golf's more rigorous pathways.  Later, these vehicles began to serve a larger purpose, as an alternate source of transportation. The golf car started to morph and all sorts of specialty vehicles were born. Since then, individuals have been scooting around the links, parks, malls, airports, manufacturing plants, farms and other venues on cars with utility beds, cars designed to transport 4, 6, and even as many as 8 passengers. And now even 4 x 4 vehicles designed for rough terrain.
